Herbal tea could be made of bark, stems, roots, flowers, seeds, fruit or leaves. They do not contain caffeine and have various health benefits. Traditional Chinese and Indian medicine have been using them for centuries because of their healing and medicinal properties.
Herbal tea or Tisane is not made from the Camellia Sinensis plant. Therefore it is not tea in the strict sense. For example:
Chamomile Tea is from a flower “Matricaria Chamomilla”. It can treat insomnia and anxiety. It is also a relaxant and immune booster.
Rooibos (also known as Red Bush Tea) is from leaves of a plant “Aspalathus Linearis”. It contains antioxidants and also helps with insomnia, digestion and blood circulation.
Peppermint is from leaves of plant “Lamiaceae”. It can relieve headaches and aid with digestion.
Hibiscus is from flower “Hibiscus sabdariffa”. It may help to treat high blood pressure and maintain healthy levels of cholesterol.
Herbal teas are delicious alternatives to caffeinated beverages. They have complex chemistries so if you like to use them for strict medicinal effects, please check with your healthcare provider first. The intent here is to introduce few types of herbal tea and to enjoy this healthy drink. Tisanes sometimes are mixed with other tisanes and dried fruits to make flavorful and aromatic drinks. For example in Provence Rooibis there is Rooibos, Rosehip + Elderberry + Blueberry pieces, Lavender + Rose petals and some natural flavors.
